WHERE
The home-base hotel will be located in Alpine or Fallbrook depending on camp date.
Alpine is located 25 miles east of San Diego, CA, and still retains some appearance of an old west town. Alpine, however, is modern and has many services within walking distance for its growing population. The town is located at 1,900 feet elevation, and has many surrounding traffic-free roads, which take in the Southern California coastal range scenery.
Fallbrook is located 50 miles north of San Diego, CA, and places the cyclist in a quaint town that has access to some of the greatest valleys and climbs that the North County has to offer. The town is located at 700 feet elevation, but don't let that deceive you—in a day's roundtrip ride, we'll reach peaks over 5,000 feet.
Lodging in Alpine and Fallbrook is centrally located for all campers.

Fallbrook: Rodeway Inn >>
WHEN
Cyclists will fly into San Diego International Airport/Lindbergh Field to arrive in Alpine or Fallbrook ready to meet Sunday at 8pm for a precamp talk. (Note: 8pm Wednesday or Thursday for weekend camps.) The shuttle will make 2 pickups on the day prior to camp: one pickup at the airport at 5pm and an additional pickup at a hotel near the airport for campers who arrive on days prior. The shuttle will make a return journey to the airport and various requested points in Downtown San Diego on Friday evening and Saturday morning (Sunday evening for weekend camps). Please arrange flights accordingly. Many choose to rent cars for flexibility during the week. Further information about the meeting point will be provided to registered campers.
The 8pm precamp talk will be located at the designated home-base hotel. Cyclists will be ready to ride at 8am on Monday. (Note: Thursday or Friday for weekend camps.)
Length of camp is determined by dates chosen. Cyclists are welcome and encouraged to fly in earlier to do further riding or vacationing in and around San Diego. More information will be provided to registered campers.
MILEAGE AND CLIMBING
Camps will have 2 daily mileage options most days of the week. The shorter rides will be around 60 miles, while the longer rides will be beyond 90 miles. There will be a good amount of climbing each day (between 4,000 and 8,000 feet), but all rides are set at a slower pace with regrouping areas and lunching areas. It does not matter if you are a good climber or not, because, again, rides are at a slower base-mileage pace with regrouping areas. Climbing is a good way for all—flatlanders and billy goats—to get necessary sustained long efforts in the off-season. The idea of the camp is base miles—this cannot be stressed enough.
Many may be encouraged to ride hard all days—this is strongly discouraged—because the overall goal of the camp is to build a solid endurance base. This way, hard work and intervals can be accomplished with better ability as the season unfolds.
AFFORDABILITY AND HIGH-VALUE
This camp is intended to be cost-effective. A SAG vehicle will be provided on longer rides, but riders should be self-sufficient. There will no prearranged meals, except for the dinner prior to the start of camp, and continental breakfast available at the hotel. On both the short and long rides, there will be a local ride leader, who will guide the cyclists on the prearranged route. On most days, both rides will have a designated lunch stop at a local eatery. It is up to the cyclists to either bring money for food, pack their own lunches, or carry (or grab from the SAG vehicle) enough sponsor provided energy bars, gels, and drinks. The home-base hotel will provide a continental breakfast and all rooms should have a microwave, toaster, and refrigerator for those campers who wish to make their own meals.
Certified coaches will ride with the campers and will be available for Q & A throughout the camp. Also, riders who can fix minor mechanical problems will be present on many rides. In case of a major mechanical failure, campers will be directed or transported to a sponsoring bike shop after the riding is complete for the day.
Two clinics will be given during the week in the morning at the home-base hotel. One clinic will include much-overlooked and rarely practiced bicycle skills for racing and group riding. The other clinic will cover descending and cornering at high speeds. All campers are encouraged to attend no matter their personal perceived skill level and regardless of the amount of years spent cycling.
